  • How Esland is using Motional to deepen therapeutic support in school

At Esland, therapeutic education is built on one essential belief: when we understand what is driving a child’s behaviour, we can respond in ways that help them feel safe, regulated and ready to learn.

Now Esland has introduced the Motional toolkit to further enhance therapeutic work within our schools. Motional is a third-party therapeutic toolkit used in schools to measure, understand and improve children’s emotional wellbeing. By combining structured insight with practical interventions and clear reporting, Motional gives Esland teams a consistent, evidence-led way to deliver therapeutic education and evidence our impact.

    Evidence of impact

At Esland Bedford School, analysis from Autumn 2025 to April 2026 shows progress across every developmental area, alongside reductions in distress-based behaviours including rage, fear and panic responses.

The result from the therapeutic work we do is children who are increasingly settled, connected and able to engage in learning.

In the words of our school team

    Headteacher Rhett Cameron said:

“The type of school we are, and the needs our students present with, mean we are always looking to measure progress in multiple ways, not just academically. Motional enables us to measure student progress against mental health outcomes, ensuring we provide an environment where students feel psychologically safe and, as a result, ready to learn.”

    Therapeutic practice at scale

Motional is now used across all Esland schools, helping us deliver a consistent, measurable therapeutic approaches in every setting and really demonstrating the results of our approaches.

Our in-house Education Clinical Lead, Annie Chappell had led the implementation of this tool. Annie explains:

Motional has given us a much deeper understanding of our children. It helps us see beyond behaviour and really understand what each child needs in order to feel safe and supported. The progress we are seeing is not just about improved behaviour, it’s about children developing the emotional stability and confidence they need to engage with the world around them.”
